Newsletter for the Week of February 28, 2011

I hope you all had a wonderful week off!  Let's get busy the next 5 weeks and use our time wisely!  Don't forget:

1. Extra credit in social studies- due Tuesday 3/1/11.
2. Reading/math logs were last checked on Friday, 2/18/11.  The last check for this nine week period will be on Thursday 3/17/11 (the end of the 9 weeks).
3. The grading period ends Thursday 3/17/11.
4. We will be assigning an animal research project.  Look for a letter to come home this week about this.
5. Field trip permission slips come home on Tuesday.  Please return your signed permission slip and donation of $5.50 as soon as possible.  Our class will be going on the trip on Wednesday 3/30/11.
6. Wordly Wise test next Tuesday (3/8/11) on Lesson 6.
7. Look for an upcoming notice about a math test on fractions and decimals this week in the agenda. 
8. Please check to make sure that your child is copying his/her agenda every night (with the exception of Fridays).

Early reminders for next week!

Hello Wonderful Mates!  I hope you are enjoying your week off and the lovely weather!  As you begin thinking about returning to school next week, here are a few reminders:

1.  Extra Credit in Social Studies--this was given to you a few weeks ago (a map about one of the 13 colonies with a few facts).  Your extra credit is worth 10 pts added to your lowest grade and is due March 1, 2011.

2.  Next week on Wednesday 3/2/11 we will be taking the 4th grade writing assessment.  This is a test to prepare you for the 5th grade writing test.  Every student will be given a prompt and then we will be given a certain amount of time to complete the brainstorming and rough draft, and then complete the final draft. Please remember to prepare for this as you would any test-- get enough sleep the night before, eat a good healthy breakfast, and come in with a great attitude!

3.  We have about 3 weeks left in this grading period.  Every child received a progress update, but please keep the end of the 9 week period in mind when studying for tests and completing classwork, and preparing to meet final A.R./reading log goals.

          Our last reading log/math log check will be on Thursday 3/17/11 (the official end of the 9 wks).  If you have already met your reading log goal, you do not need to turn in your final log.

Social Studies Extra Credit Reminder!

Don't foget that your social studies extra credit (colonies) is due March 1st (the Tuesday after you return).  Please plan on doing this extra credit since it is worth 10 valuable points added to your lowest grade in social studies this nine weeks.  Good luck!

Spring Pictures!

Spring Pictures are here!  Please remember that there are no retakes for these pictures.  If you plan on purchasing them, please send in the money for your package as soon as possible.  Final money MUST be turned in by 3/2/11.  If you choose not to purchase your pictures, simply have your student return the pictures to school.  Thank you!

Class Newsletter for February 14, 2011

Happy Valentine's Day!  I hope that we have a "sweet" week!

Reminders for this week:

• Health test Monday 2/14/11
• If you plan on handing out valentines, please bring them in on Monday, 2/14/11.  Please remember to bring one in for everyone (an updated list was sent last week to help).  Don't forget to bring a box or bag to carry home your own cards.
• Switch back to Science this week on Wednesday 2/16/11.  Don't forget that you have a project due.
• Spelling test also on Wednesday 2/16/11.
• Social Studies extra credit was given out last week.  It will be due after your winter break on 3/1/11.  Please take advantage of this opportunity!
• Reading log/math log check on Friday 2/18/11.
• Progress updates will come out this week.  Parents, please look over these updates and remember that they only reflect 4 1/2 weeks of grades.  Your child has several weeks to raise or maintain current grades.  Also, please increase study time and expectations at home as the curriculum has become significantly more challenging!
• Don't forget to practice your CRCT tests on the Georgia OAS system.  A letter was sent home about this previously.  This is an outstanding way to help prepare for the CRCT, which is only a few weeks away.  The CRCT begins in April, after Spring Break. Don't wait until the last minute to prepare!

Class Newsletter for February 7, 2011

Another busy week ahead, mates!  Don't forget--now is the time (more than ever) to increase your study time.  We are learning some challenging concepts and all students need to increase their study time. Be sure to check your agenda every night, spend time doing your homework and reading your A.R. book and practicing math facts, and study early for tests.  Other reminders for this week include:

• Upcoming Health test Chp. 5 (Guarding Against Disease) next Monday 2/14/11
• Reading log/math log check next Friday 2/18/11
• Social Studies test this Monday (previously announced a full week in advance with reminders in the agenda and in class)
• Math extra credit opportunity (see previous blog entry) given in class-due this Friday 2/11/11.
• Upcoming social studies extra credit opportunity to be given in class this week (look for a sheet to come home about this).
• We have just completed the halfway mark of the grading period--don't fall behind now. Work smart and work ahead!  You can do it!

Marvelous Math Extra Credit!

Parents and Students,

We are hard at work mastering fractions. So far we've covered basic fractions, equivalent fractions(ex: 2/4 = 1/2), mixed numbers and improper fractions. These are difficult concepts so please, please, please increase your study time at home! If you need extra practice, don't forget to check out the "Show Me" toolbar on your math e-book.

To help out students, I offered them the chance to earn 10 points as extra credit in math. These 10 points will be added to their lowest grade this 9 week period. Students were given a improper fractions & mixed numbers math sheet (front and back) today in class that will be due next Friday 2/11/11. Parents, please ask your child about this worthwhile opportunity!

Updates and Reminders

Whew, what a busy week and we are only halfway through!  To keep you in the loop, here's what is going on:

1. Upcoming Social Studies Test next Monday 2/7/11 on Chp. 5:  Use your social studies spiral notebook to study as well as your textbook.  Be sure to look over the vocabulary (dissenter, banish, import, etc.) in our spiral notebook, as well as the map of the 13 colonies, the chart about land types and resources.  Remember, much of this is in your spiral notebook, but don't forget to check out your textbook too!
2. Family Dance- this Friday. Come and be part of the fun!
3. CRCT challenge--Dr. Griffeth and Dr. Taylor have issued a challenge for us!  Between now and April 1st, take as many CRCT practice tests as you can.  You'll be invited to a special celebration if you complete at least 20 with 75% or higher accuracy (you can go back and take a test again to improve your score).  Details were sent home about this on Tuesday 2/1/11.  Let's get busy!
4. It's almost the end of the 4 1/2 week mark.  You should be halfway to your goals in A.R. and on reading logs and timed tests.  Work hard, and study often!  Parents, don't forget that the curriculum and expectations have picked up considerably now that we are in the second half of the year.  Please, please make your child's reading, math practice, studying and homework a priority!  Your help is so appreciated!
