In its more than 40-year history, the Reflections program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to explore their artistic talents. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to submit works of art in six arts areas:
Each year, the National PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The 2011-2012 theme is "Diversity Means..." Remember that Reflections is not a “poster” contest, so the theme is only a general guideline. Interpretation of the theme, along with creativity and mastery of the medium will be what the judges are looking for.
Supporting the PTA Reflections Program is one way you can encourage children’s creativity, increase student achievement, and promote the arts in your home, your school, and your community. Participation and appreciation for the arts is the Reflections Program's goal. Although the Reflections Program follows a "contest" format, winning should not be the emphasis.
National PTA has partnered with Parenting Magazine to host galleries of select Reflections artwork at www.parenting.com/PTA. You should visit these galleries to get an idea of how young artists are interpreting the theme.
All students must adhere to the General Student Participation Rules as well as the rules for the specific arts area. Below are the rules in a PDF form.
